TOURIST SITES AROUND KAKAMEGA


Kakamega is certainly not a highly publicized destination for tourism but it is an area of great geographic, cultural and natural diversity offering visitors be just as much than many of Kenya's better known tourist destinations.
Here is a list of some of the wonderful places to visit during holidays:

1.KAKAMEGA FOREST RESERVE
Some call it "canopy of natural beauty"
The Kakamega Forest biodiversity resembles that of the rainforest of central and West Africa. It offers an exciting challenge for nature lovers to explore the forest. Activities involve bird watching-the forest hosts over 300bird species, hiking and rock climbing. Do not miss the view point of Buyangu Hill with the wonderful overview especially impressive at sunrise, small but lovely isiukhu fall and the giant tree on Mukangu trails.

2.NABONGO CULTURAL CENTER
Located in Matungu off mumias road. This center depicts the past, present and future ways of the long-standing Wanga kingdom. It showcases the rich Wanga culture and the only kingdom in Kenya.

3.CRYING STONE
Famously known as "Ikhongo Murue"
Situated off the Kakamega-Kisumu highway at a place called Ilesi. Resembles a human figure; head resting on weary shoulders with tears streaming down the length. At it's base are beautiful caves intertwined within in beautiful angles. 

Also within is the Crying Stone View Point Hotel which offers various services including accomodation, outdoor cottages and delicious mouth-watering local meals of Luhya origin.

4.GOLF HOTEL
Located a stone throw outside the Kakamega businesses district along Khasakhala road about 750m from the town center and is excellent for both business and leisure activities.
Beautiful for outdoor events and a beautiful swimming pool with a young kids pool also availed. A variety of children games such as swings, slides among others also there.

5.RONDO RETREAT
Famously known as the "Haven of tranquility".
The resort is located about 35km from Kakamega Town. It is a tranquil serene place away from the heckles and noises in town ideal for hiking and family funfair, fireplace and with garden view balconies.Made of old colonial wooden buildings with a superb garden full of flowers. Visit this place for a tropical treat.

6.LAMANIS HAVEN
Located 5km from Kakamega central business district along Isukha-Ichina Road.
The three-bedroom houses  in the quiet and beautiful neighborhood offers both exclusivity and freedom that come with grand views of the rural landscape, tea plantation and a glimpse of the Kakamega Forest.
Offers self- catering basis among other services.

7.MAWE TATU
Though not famously known this could be the ideal place for a family hang out and expedition. Vaguely resembles the traditional three stone fire cooking formation.
Located about 35km from Kakamega Town in Kongoni location likuyani constituency. Serves as a welcome hiking place with excellent vantage base to view the verdant landscape.

8.LIRHANDA CAVES
Located on Lirhanda Hill within the Kakamega Forest and is home to one of the largest bat colonies in Kenya as over 111 varied species take residence here.
The path to and from the cave has views of the Yala River, Isiukhu falls where hikers can enjoy the serenity and solitude of the forest as well as its plentitude of birds and beautiful butterflies.

9.SAVONA ISLE RESORT
Conviniently located near Kakamega Town central business district just 1.2km from the town center towards the airstrip.

The U- shape of the meandering River Isiukhu gives it the superficial appearance of an island.
Splendid for both day excursions and overnight nights with a wonderful king-size swimming pool.

10. NABUYOLE FALLS WEBUYE
Located near Webuye town, the beautiful scenery at this place is created when river Nabuloye joins and releases it's water into the giant river Nzoia.

The green and healthy plantation around creates a beautiful Flora and fauna for the eye enjoyment and good for winding away your octogenarian mind boggling issues as you enjoy the nature.
